Historic Sports for Health 2023, comes to an end

The 2023 Sport for Health, described by many as the most successful, has come to an end in Basse, URR.

The Governor of the Upper River Region, Hon. Samba Bah, today 13th August, 2023, declared the 2023 Sport for Health, officially closed at a colorful ceremony held at the Youth Center in the heart of Basse.

The supportive and energetic Governor of the Region, addressed the gathering, at the ceremony marking the end of the Sport for Health held in his Region.

Speaking at the closing ceremony of the event organized by the National Sport Council in collaboration with the Non Communicable Diseases Unit of the Ministry of Health, Governor Bah, thanked every one who participated in making the event successful. He encouraged everyone to continue doing physical exercise. He went on to promise that his office will work closely with the Regional Sport Committee headed by Alagie Muya Baldeh, in order to promote and develop sport in URR.

The Executive Director of the National Sport Council, Mr. Marchel Mendy, thanked all the participants especially the Regional Education Office through their Director, Mrs Sey, who was able to mobilize her teachers despite them being on holidays. Mr. Mendy also expressed his admiration and appreciation to the Governor of URR and his office for not only collaborating but also participating in activities marking the three day event from start to end.

For his part, the Program Manager of Non Communicable Diseases Unit of the Ministry of Health, Mr. Omar Badjie, informed the gathering that regular non communicable diseases are a major threat to our health and directly or indirectly, affect every household in The Gambia. He argued that in order to prevent it, we most engage in physical activity, adding that his unit will continue to work with NSC in organising such events.

The WHO Representative at the event, Dr. Momodou Gassama, couldn’t hide his joy about the successful hosting of the event. The WHO senior official encouraged participants to continue the spirit, observing that it can only go to improve their health status.

The Sport for Health 2023 closing ceremony was chaired by Deputy Executive Director of the National Sport Council, Mr. Mahmoud Lamin Jawla.
