Banjul, The Gambia – The National Sports Council (NSC) continues to affirm its commitment to the development of sports and its collaborative relationship with sports journalists in The Gambia. On August 31, 2024, NSC’s Program Manager, Ebou Secka, and Communication & PR Manager, Sara Camara, on behalf of the National Sports Council attended the Sports Journalists Association of The Gambia (SJAG) Elective Congress held at NaNA Hall.
The presence of NSC officials at the event underscored the Council’s dedication to strengthening ties with the sports Journalist and recognizing the vital role journalists play in promoting and reporting on sports in the country.
Speaking at the event, Program Manager Ebou Secka highlighted the significant influence of SJAG in disseminating sports-related information. He noted that the delegates present were crucial in electing a new executive for the association. “Everyone understands the importance of SJAG in terms of providing sports information,” Secka remarked. “The delegates gathered here today are instrumental in ushering in a new executive, and I urge them to consider key factors before electing anyone into office.”
Secka cautioned against the challenges faced by sports organizations nationwide, where individuals who are elected without fully understanding the voluntary nature of sports service may become disillusioned and leave their positions. “This issue affects all sports organizations and associations across the country. It’s crucial to elect individuals who are genuinely committed to the development of sports,” he emphasized.
He also drew attention to the gap between The Gambia and its international counterparts in sports development, urging a renewed commitment to advancing sports in the country. “When we compare ourselves with our counterparts abroad, the gap is evident. However, we must remain dedicated to the development of our country, especially in sports, as it has the power to bring peace, harmony, and togetherness.”
Mr. Secka advised sports journalists to avoid negative reporting, as it hinders the progress of sports. He assured them that the NSC’s doors are always open for clarification on any matters concerning sports. “We welcome all journalists to reach out to us for accurate information, as this will help in the positive development of sports in The Gambia.”
He concluded by expressing gratitude to both the outgoing and incoming SJAG executives, as well as the association’s sister counterparts from Senegal who attended the event, further reinforcing the spirit of collaboration and mutual support within the West African sports community.
The NSC’s attendance at the SJAG election is a testament to its ongoing efforts to foster a strong and supportive environment for sports journalism and development in The Gambia.
