On Sunday, November 10, 2024, the Lower River Region (LRR) elected a new executive committee, headed by Mr. Mustapha Sabally, to oversee wrestling affairs in the region. The election, which took place in Soma, saw the committee members elected unopposed, reflecting a unified decision among stakeholders. The newly formed executive is set to play a pivotal role in developing and promoting traditional wrestling across LRR.
The election gathering welcomed representatives from all districts within the region and included key figures in the wrestling community. Representing Chief Alagie SeediaJajursey, who was unable to attend due to other commitments, was a local delegate who conveyed warm greetings on behalf of Seyfo Jajursey. Mr. Alagie Abdoulie Bojang, Desk officer for wrestling at National Sports Council expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality of the people of LRR. He emphasizing the significance of such gatherings which contributes to laying a solid foundation for the development of wrestling. Reflecting on the history of wrestling in LRR, Mr. Bojang demonstrated his optimism for the future of wrestling in the region, noting the presence of notable elders as an indication of the community’s support and love for the sport.
Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) President, Serign ModouFaye, commended Mr. Mustapha Sabally’s dedication, specifically highlighting his personal contribution to securing a plot of land for a wrestling arena. President Faye urged the people of LRR to unite and support the regional committee, pledging the GWA’s continued support as the new executive embarks on its tenure.
The congress proceedings were presided over by Mr. Maja Ceesay Chairman LRR Sport Committee.The Elective Congress was attended by high-profile dignitaries from the region.
