Gambia suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Senegal in their opening Group C match at the TotalEnergies CAF U17 Africa Cup of Nations on Tuesday.

The Young Scorpions fell behind early at the Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida when Ibrahima Sow’s stunning 7th-minute free-kick found the top corner. Despite the early setback, Gambia responded with resilience, enjoying spells of possession and creating several goal-scoring opportunities, particularly in the second half.

Ebrima Jatta came closest to equalizing in the 87th minute, narrowly missing from close range. Earlier, in the 69th minute, Bisenty Mendy’s long-range strike forced a crucial save from Senegalese goalkeeper Alpha Mbengue.

Senegal, however, defended resolutely, with Cheikh Dieng and Lamine Mbengue key in repelling Gambia’s attacks. The Young Teranga Lions also had chances to double their lead but were unable to capitalize, with efforts from Mouhamed Wagner and Ousseynou Ndiaye going wide.

With this result, Senegal moves to the top of Group C with three points. Gambia must regroup quickly as they prepare for a crucial second match against Somalia on Friday, where a victory will be vital to keep their semi-final hopes alive.

With only two matches remaining in the group stage, every point will be crucial in the race for a spot at the FIFA U17 World Cup.
