The Minister of Youth and Sports, Hon. Bakary Y. Badjie, today received The Gambia’s Deaf National Football Team — the Deaf Scorpions — at the PIA Hall in Banjul, following their historic silver medal finish at the 13th West Africa Deaf Football Championship in Abuja, Nigeria.
The team’s participation in the tournament was made possible through D1 million in financial support from the Government of The Gambia, channeled through the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MoYS). This vital backing not only ensured the team’s presence in Nigeria but also played a key role in their remarkable performance.
In a symbolic gesture of appreciation, the Deaf Scorpions awarded a medal to Hon. Badjie in recognition of his ministry’s steadfast support — both in funding their journey and in welcoming them home.
The 13-man squad and their two officials proudly presented their achievements to the minister, which include:
• Silver Medals
• A Gold Medal
• A Fair Play Trophy
• A Letter of Commendation for being the Most Disciplined Team
Hon. Badjie congratulated the players for their resilience and discipline, praising them for flying The Gambia’s flag high despite challenges, including competing with one of the smallest squads in the tournament. He reaffirmed the government’s continued commitment to sports development and inclusivity, stressing that the Deaf Scorpions’ success reflects the positive impact of government investment in sports.
The minister was accompanied by Mr. Sara Camara, Communication and Public Relations Manager at the National Sports Council (NSC), who played a key role in welcoming the team home and facilitating the engagement.
The Deaf Scorpions’ silver triumph has been hailed as a historic moment, symbolizing resilience, inclusion, and national pride — and a strong example of how MoYS’ investment continues to uplift Gambian sports at all levels.
