Sara Camara Champions Girls’ Empowerment Through Sports at Mbeye Badjie Basketball Camp

Banjul, The Gambia – The Late Mbeye Badjie Basketball Summer Camp officially opened in Banjul with over 100 girls in attendance at St Augustine Senior Secondary School, marking a historic milestone for Gambian basketball.

Speaking on behalf of the Acting Executive Director of the National Sports Council (NSC), Mr. Mahmoud L. Jawla, the Council’s Communication and Public Relations Manager, Sara Camara, delivered an inspiring speech centered on empowerment, education, and inclusivity.

“Today’s event is not just about basketball—it is about empowerment, opportunity, and change. When we speak of empowering girls through education and sports, we are speaking of building a stronger, more inclusive Gambia where no talent is left behind,” Camara declared.

He praised the Honorable Minister of Youth and Sports, Bakary Y. Badjie, for his leadership in advancing sports development and gender equality in The Gambia. “Under his stewardship, we have seen renewed investments in youth programs, the revival of national competitions, and most importantly, deliberate efforts to ensure that women and girls are given equal opportunities to excel in sports,” Camara said.

Organized by the Mbye Badjie Foundation under the theme “Empowering Girls Through Education and Sports,” the camp combines intensive basketball training with mentorship and education.

Addressing the young participants, Camara encouraged them to embrace the opportunity: “Basketball is more than just a game—it is about teamwork, discipline, resilience, and leadership. These are life skills that will serve you in every path you choose. Never doubt your potential. You are not just the future—you are the present, and this country is looking up to you.”

The Late Mbeye Badjie Basketball Summer Camp continues until September 7th at St Augustine Senior Secondary School, with activities designed to inspire and empower the next generation of female athletes and leaders.
