In a decisive step toward strengthening grassroots sports development and community engagement, the National Sports Council (NSC), in collaboration with key stakeholders on Thursday convened a strategic engagement with District Sports Committees across the Kanifing Municipality.
The high-level briefing, attended by representatives from Serrekunda Central, East, West, and Bakau, marked a significant milestone in the countdown to the much-anticipated inauguration of the Serrekunda Central Mini Stadium — a state-of-the-art facility poised to transform community sports.
Accompanied by the General Manager of ISFH, officials used the platform to formally inform stakeholders of the historic inaugural ceremony scheduled for 21st June 2026 at 4:00 PM, to be presided over by His Excellency, the President of the Republic of The Gambia.
The inauguration promises to be more than a ceremonial event. It will serve as a celebration of unity, youth empowerment, and sporting excellence. A symbolic four-team football tournament featuring Serrekunda Central, Serrekunda East, Serrekunda West, and Bakau has been lined up as a highlight of the day. This competitive showcase is designed to reflect the vibrancy and potential of community-based football.
Adding further excitement and diversity to the programme, exhibition matches in volleyball and basketball will be staged, reinforcing the NSC’s commitment to multi-sport development and inclusivity.
Beyond the sporting agenda, the day’s engagements were deeply rooted in cultural respect and community inclusion. In keeping with tradition, NSC officials and partners paid courtesy visits to the Alkalos of Bundung, Serrekunda, and Bakoteh — the three communities that host and surround the facility. During these visits, kolanuts were presented as a symbol of respect and unity, formally conveying the President’s invitation through the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sports.
These gestures underscore the Council’s recognition that sustainable sports development must be anchored in community ownership, cultural values, and strong local leadership.
As the nation prepares for this landmark event, the NSC reaffirms its commitment to developing infrastructure that not only nurtures talent but also strengthens social cohesion and national pride.
The Serrekunda Central Mini Stadium stands as a beacon of progress — a symbol of what can be achieved when government, communities, and stakeholders work together to elevate Gambian sports.
