Abuja, Nigeria – March 8, 2025

In a powerful show of patriotism and support, Modou Njie, former Director of Health Promotion and Education in The Gambia and now the National Coordinator at the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) for the West African region, hosted a special dinner on Friday night for The Gambia’s wrestling team in Abuja. The team is currently in Nigeria participating in the ECOWAS African Wrestling Tournament, representing the nation on the continental stage.

The event, held at Njie’s residence in Abuja, was a moment of celebration, motivation, and camaraderie as the team continues their quest for regional glory. Also gracing the occasion was The Gambia’s Councilor in Abuja, Mr. Sosseh, who joined in encouraging the athletes.

Njie, a highly respected public health expert and leader in Africa’s disease prevention and control efforts, used the gathering to reaffirm his commitment to supporting Gambian athletes and promoting sports as a unifying force. Speaking to the team, he praised their dedication and resilience, highlighting the significance of their representation at the ECOWAS tournament.

The dinner provided a relaxed environment for the athletes to engage with Gambian officials in Abuja, fostering a sense of home away from home.
