Central River Region Elects New Wrestling Executive Committee

Stakeholders in the Central River Region (CRR) convened on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at the Janjanbureh Youth Centre for an elective congress to appoint a new executive committee to oversee the region’s wrestling affairs. The congress saw delegates unanimously elect most positions unopposed, except for the Vice Chairman role, which was contested. Mamut Ceesay emerged victorious with 18 votes, defeating the former Vice Chairman, Demba Baldeh, who received 5 votes.

Speaking during the event, Alagie Abdoulie Bojang, Wrestling Desk Officer, emphasized the region’s deep-rooted connection to wrestling. “CRR is a wrestling hub; it used to be a joyous occasion when villagers and authorities came together for wrestling programs. I urge the new executive and promoters to engage local authorities for support, as the region’s passion for wrestling offers a great opportunity for growth,” he said. Bojang also commended the Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) and the National Sports Council (NSC) for their proactive role in ensuring regional congresses are held nationwide.

Ousman Njie, Second Vice President of the GWA, expressed gratitude to outgoing Chairman Mass Sowe and his team for their dedication to wrestling in the region. He reiterated the GWA’s role in supervising and ensuring adherence to its constitution during the proceedings. Njie encouraged the new executive to focus on reviving wrestling in CRR and assured them of the GWA’s continued support.

Abdoulie Jawara, Chairman of the Regional Youth Committee, praised the peaceful atmosphere of the congress and shared his enthusiasm for wrestling. “As a big fan of wrestling and an organizer of past events, I understand the challenges ahead. However, I trust this team to meet expectations. Unity is critical; avoid division and work as a cohesive team,” he emphasized.

Jamber Trawally, Regional Sports Chairperson, also offered advice, stressing resilience in leadership. “Leadership comes with challenges. You must stay strong, work hard, and always prioritize the interests of your people,” he stated.
