Commonwealth Games 2022 officially opened

The Commonwealth Games 2022 to be held in the metropolitan city of Birmingham, England was officially opened on Thursday 28th July, 2022 at the famous Alexander Stadium in Birmingham City.

The event which was attended by Hon. Minister, Bakary Y. Badjie; Executive Director of the National Sport Council, Marchel Mendy; President of the GNOC, Madam Beatrice Allen; Mr. Suntu Touray of the Gambia High Commission in England and Gambian athletes was attended by more than thirty thousand people from different countries.

The opening ceremony of the event which will see at least five thousand athletes compete in various sport disciplines, showcased vibrance; colour and diversity of England. In attendance, was Prince Charles who read a statement on behalf of the Queen.

The ceremony was not short of musical and traditional performances, culminating in the celebration of diversity with delegates and athletes from the member states, marching majestically in their traditional wears to take their designated places. While there were emotional moments on the day, there were smiles and laughter with the skies lit up by a myriad of fireworks.

The Birmingham Games which will become the biggest in the history of the games with new sport disciplines added but also the first Games with more medals up for grabs by female athletes was preceded by the Commonwealth Sport Ministers and Senior Government officials’ meeting held at the International Convention Center, Birmingham on 27th July, 2022.

Birmingham 2022 games will be remembered as the most attended games in the history of the commonwealth, with one million, two hundred thousand tickets already sold out.
