The Gambia’s Deaf National Football Team has fought their way into the semi-finals of the 13th Edition of the West African Deaf Football Tournament 2025 currently underway at the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium in Abuja, Nigeria.
Despite a tough group stage, the 13-man Gambian squad showed resilience and determination for their beloved motherland. Drawn in Group A alongside hosts Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire, the Gambians finished third but secured qualification as one of the best-placed teams.
Their campaign began with a narrow 3-2 defeat to Nigeria on August 23rd before salvaging a crucial 1-1 draw with Côte d’Ivoire the following day. With a record of two matches, one draw, one loss, three goals scored, and four conceded, the Gambian side accumulated one point to book their place in the knockout stage.
In the other group, Liberia dominated with maximum points, defeating Togo 3-0 and edging past Niger Republic 2-1 to finish top of Group B.
That sets up a mouthwatering semi-final showdown between Liberia and The Gambia on Wednesday, 27th August 2025 at 4:00PM. The other semi-final will see Nigeria take on Niger Republic.
For the Gambian team, it is a chance to make history and inspire pride at home. Though operating with a lean squad, the players have shown incredible spirit and are eager to rise to the challenge against Liberia’s high-flying side.
As the stage is set in Abuja, all eyes will be on the Deaf Scorpions, who continue to punch above their weight, fighting not just for victory but for the pride of The Gambia.
