The Gambia U21 basketball team kicked off their campaign in the U21 Amilcar Cabral Tournament with a resounding 64-40 victory over Guinea Bissau in Bissau. This marks a significant moment for Gambian basketball, as it is the country’s first international win in over 20 years.
Led by coach Daniel Nyaki, the team put forth an impressive performance, particularly in defense. Nyaki expressed his satisfaction with the result, stating, “It was a great game, and they really played well, especially with the defense. However, we need to step up and correct some mistakes. We’re taking it one game at a time.”
Nyaki emphasized the importance of the victory, calling it a significant milestone after many years. “We are here to play for The Gambia, and we’re on a mission,” he added.
The standout player of the match was Edrissa Njie, who was named Man of the Match for his outstanding contribution to the team’s success. Coach Nyaki praised Njie’s performance, acknowledging him as a key player for the team.
The Gambia U21 team’s next challenge will be against Senegal on September 21, 2024, as they continue their pursuit of success in the tournament.
