The Ministry of Youth and Sports, through the National Sports Council (NSC), has approved a financial support of D400,000 to the U16 National Basketball male and female teams. This allocation is to ensure their participation in the prestigious FIBA Zone 2 (3 on 3) Basketball Tournament. The competition will take place from December 27–29, 2024, in Thiès, Senegal, bringing together young talents from Senegal, Mauritania, Guinea Conakry, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia.
This financial backing underscores the Ministry’s unwavering commitment to the development of sports in The Gambia. The funds will cover essential budgetary requirements for both teams.
The support highlights the Ministry’s dedication to empowering young athletes and showcasing Gambian talent on international platforms, even amidst financial constraints.
The FIBA Zone 2 U16 Tournament serves as an important opportunity for Gambian youth to gain exposure, develop their skills, and inspire future generations of basketball players. The Gambia Basketball Association (GBA) has played a critical role in preparing these young athletes, ensuring they represent the nation with pride and also prepare for the upcoming World Youth Games to be hosted by Senegal in 2026.
Basketball enthusiasts and fans are encouraged to show their support as the U16 teams embark on this journey to make their mark and bring glory to The Gambia.
