Mustapha Touray Selected to Represent The Gambia at FIBA Africa Regional Youth Camp

The Secretary General of the Gambia Basketball Association (GBA) Alieu Nyang has confirmed that Mustapha Touray will represent The Gambia at the 2024 FIBA Africa Regional Youth Camp, set to take place from October 14 to 17 in Douala, Cameroon. This basketball camp, organized by FIBA, brings together some of Africa’s most promising young basketball talents for a rigorous training camp, aimed at identifying and nurturing future basketball stars.

FIBA selects players based on their potential, offering them the opportunity to train with some of the best coaches from Africa, alongside NBA coaches. The camp provides an invaluable platform for young players to showcase their skills and, if they perform exceptionally, to earn further invitations to additional camps and exposure to the international basketball community.

However, this year’s camp participation is limited to the male category for The Gambia, with Mustapha Touray as the sole representative. The GBA is responsible for facilitating his visa process and securing the necessary parental affidavit, as the camp targets youth between the ages of 15 and 16 years old. Mustapha was also part of the team that travelled to Bissau earlier this year.

This marks The Gambia’s fourth consecutive year participating in the FIBA Africa Regional Youth Camp. Previous Gambian participants include Pateh Dibba, Ebrima Samba, Fanta Minteh, and Tida Minteh. The camp offers three days of intensive basketball training, designed to expose Africa’s young players to elite-level coaching, enhancing their skills, and furthering their potential basketball careers.

The FIBA Africa Youth Camp has proven to be a stepping stone for many aspiring basketball players across Africa, and Mustapha’s participation represents another opportunity for The Gambia to further its presence on the continental basketball stage.
