Stakeholders in the North Bank Region convened in Kerewan on Saturday, 9th November 2024, for an Elective Congress that saw the unopposed election of a new executive committee to steer wrestling development in the region. The event was presided over by the Sprt Chairperson Buba Ceesay and graced by prominent people from the region including the Kerewan Area Council’s Chairman, Papa Tunkara, brought together key figures from the wrestling community, including Alagie K. Saho, Vice Chairman and Pa Modou Gaye Youth Chairman, alongside representatives from the Gambia Wrestling Association (GWA) and National Sports Council.
The delegation from the GWA was led by President Serign Modou Faye, with 2nd Vice President Ousman Njie and Secretary General Ebrima Suwareh.
In his remarks, Chairman Tunkara thanked the representatives from both the National Sports Council (NSC) and GWA for their guidance and commitment. He underscored the importance of unity among stakeholders to elevate wrestling in the North Bank Region and asured them of Kerewan Area Council’s support for the new committee.
Alagie Abdoulie Bojang, the Desk Officer for wrestling, praised the stakeholders for their dedication.He emphasized the need to rally behind the new executive for the progress of the sport. He also requested a moment of sincere prayer for the departed members of the wrestling community who had contributed to the sport over the years.
GWA President Serign Modou Faye highlighted the invaluable contributions of the outgoing Chairman Amat Mboob, commending him for his service and sacrifices for years. Faye called on the stakeholders to prioritize the region’s collective interest and expressed appreciation for Tunkara’s exemplary leadership.
In his address, Amat Mboob acknowledged the challenges faced by the wrestling committee, citing the loss of three members and the illness of two others as setbacks. He announced a consensus to retain his position as Chairman, with Modou Lamin Mboge stepping in as Vice Chairman. Mboob urged the natives of NBR to work collaboratively for the advancement of wresting before pointing out to the upcoming NAYCONF event as an opportunity to showcase regional talent.
Other speakers, including Alagie K. Saho and Pa Modou, encouraged the executive committee to proactively engage all stakeholders within and beyond the region to foster steady growth in wrestling.
