HE President Barrow hands over battle flag to the Gambian contingent to CW and Islamic Games

The departure of the Gambia delegation was preceded by the handing over of the battle flag by His Excellency, President of the Republic of The Gambia, President Adama Barrow, at a ceremony held at the State House.

The Commonwealth Games which will take place in Birmingham will be from 28th July to 8th August and the Islamic Games to be held in Konya, will be from 9th to 18 August 2022. Athletics, Judo, Beach Volleyball, Basketball, Para sports , Boxing and Taekwondo these are the sports the country will participate in

Bidding farewell to the athletes, coaches and officials, President Barrow recalled being congratulated by the President of FIFA, Gianni Infantino, following the Scorpions’ splendid performances at the recently concluded AFCON. He went on to highlight the meteoric developments in Gambian sport. He also used the occasion to encourage athletes, coaches and administrators to put up their best efforts in raising the country’s flag.

For his part, the Hon. Minister of Youth and Sport congratulated the athletes on the achievements they have registered over the years. He went on to pledge his office’s unalloyed support to sport development.

The ceremony was chaired by Executive Director of the National Sport Council, Mr Marchel Mendy.

At the Commonwealth and Islamic Games, the Gambian athletes will compete in athletics; judo; taekwondo, basketball; beach volleyball, para sports; tennis.
