Day 8 at the ongoing Commonwealth Games was a busy and entertaining one for Team Gambia, as five athletes took part in the athletics events and two in the beach volleyball.
The duo, Sainey Jawo and Mbye Baboucarr Jarra, earlier today lost to a resilient Canadian team, 2-1 in a highly competitive match being the last match of the men’s Pool A first rounds.
Despite the outcome of today’s match, the Gambian team will progress to the quarter final, having defeated both Sri Lanka and St. Kitts and Nevis hitherto.
In athletics, Gambian track queen, Gina Bass came second in heat four in the 200m with a time of 22:87sec, booking her place in the semifinals tomorrow.
Debutant Wurrie Nyadore, running side-by-side with Olympian, Christine Mboma finished fourth in heat two with a time of 24.12sec, enough to qualify her to the semifinals of the 200m.
In men’s 200m, team captain Adama Jammed; Alieu Joof and Sengan Jobe couldn’t make it to the semifinals from their various heats.
The only hope of the male contingent winning a medal is the 4x100m scheduled to take place on Friday at the Alexander Stadium, when the current 100m and 200m champion, Ebrima Camara will join the earlier mentioned.
Congratulations and good luck to Team Gambia
