Mr. Justice, the ICC Development Officer for Africa, recently visited the National Sport Council offices at the Independence Stadium, Bakau.
Introducing the visiting officer, the president of the Gambia Cricket Association, Mr. Johnny Gomez stated that the visit of the ICC Officer was meant to assess activities of the association, meet with stakeholders and to visit facilities available to them for their domestic league and other programs.
For his part, the International Cricket Council development officer for Africa informed the NSC that the purpose of his visit was to look into the operation of the Gambia Cricket Association with regard to their domestic league, administration and financing among other things. In a rather happy tone, he told the NSC that there was going to be a meeting to decide whether or not Cricket should be part of the Olympic Games and that he was hopeful it will be approved. The ICC Officer emphasized the need for organizing Women U19, Men U19 leagues.
Speaking earlier, the Executive Director of the NSC, Mr. Marchel Mendy, thanked the visiting ICC officer for the visit. He told him that his office is happy with the progress registered in cricket, noting that his office is aware of some of their constraints and have been working on resolving them. He went further to applaud the International Cricket Council for the support rendered to their member associations but was quick to call for more support particularly for developing nations. The NSC boss, assured him of his office’s continuous support to the Gambia Cricket Association and her programs.
